Warner Bros. and Ex-Wonder Woman director, Michelle MacLaren have parted ways on the upcoming movie.
“Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together,” said the studio in a statement, via The Hollywood Reporter.
Yes we have all heard it before. The same reason why Edgar Wright left Ant-man, and now Wonder Woman, an integral part of the Holy Trinity in the DC Cinematic Universe has suffered the same fate. The difference between them however is, when Wright left Ant-Man that caused way more controversy. This piece of news has fans worried but no doom and gloom has been expressed to the project.
MacLaren, TV veteran, has played a role in some of the most well known TV shows such as Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead. Warner Bros. announced she would helm the project back in November of 2014, and now only a few short months later, it has no director.
Now what does this mean for the DC Cinematic Universe? Wonder Woman is arguably among one of most important movies to come out for Warner Bros. on their slate. Simply because they’ll be the first studio out of the gate to bring a super hero female lead movie to the silver screen before their competitor, Marvel. This can be DC Comics ace in the whole if they can find a new director that matches their vision fast.
Although you can count all the reasons why Marvel is ahead of the game, truthfully fans of geek culture will be getting absolutely spoiled in the next few years. Wonder Woman could be the start to a new age of super hero movies. This could spawn more obscure female characters from both universes to have their own movies. But first, we will have to wait and see how Gal Gadot portrays one of the most iconic characters in comics when Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice releases on Mar.25, 2016.
If Gadot’s portrayal of the character is received well, it could even bring in new audiences that are still on the fence about seeing super hero movies. Once they see that there could be more than just male super heroes dominating the box office, those people may be inclined to check out the blockbuster craze. Seeing a strong female protagonist might put more butts in seats and may intentionally cause some women to yell, “Girl Power!”
It’s unclear if the departure of MacLaren will push back the street date of June 23, 2017 even further.
