Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Gets Trailer and Release Month

After 13 years, it’s finally here: Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 will close out the Rebuild of Evangelion saga in Japanese theatres on June 2020.

Beginning in 2007, the Rebuild of Evangelion movies were meant to celebrate Gainax’s hit mecha show Neon Genesis Evangelion, first by retelling it and then by going in their own direction. The first two movies, the second of which diverged from the original plot, went over well with the fans. The third is widely considered to be poorly made and boring, and the series went on indefinite hiatus due to troubles at Gainax. The saga is finally coming to an end next year, a concept that should please many fans who’d just like Rebuild to leave.

The teaser we have here is a brief enigmatic affair that shows some odd monsters, largely vapid Christian symbolism, and the core cast, who are, generally speaking, not doing well. There’s also someone whose presence is rather odd, though I won’t elaborate. Hopefully, the writing and pacing issues that plagued the third film will have been solved here, and we can get some renewed faith in the franchise. If not, well, the rest of the Evangelion franchise just got ported over to Netflix, so we can all enjoy that instead.

Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 will descend in June 2020. It remains to be seen as to whether it will end strong or not, but at least it’ll be over and done with.
